2010- 2011 Carl B Casey Memorial Scholarship

Carl enjoying golf in Yuma, Arizona in February 2009

My name is Mark Casey.  I am proud to be here in my dad’s honor to present the 1st annual Carl B Casey Memorial Scholarship Award.  My family established this scholarship in his name to help student athletes with a focus and desire to pursue higher education.

My father was a baseball and golf fanatic. He loved both sports and enjoyed attending a good baseball game. More importantly, he always appreciated a player that worked hard on and off the field. Dedication, hard work, devotion and perseverance was my dad’s forte. This applicant showed that and we look forward to seeing their hard work pay off on and off the field during his college career.

On behalf of my family, I would like to extend our personal best wishes to the FIRST recipient of the Carl B. Casey Memorial Scholarship, Robert Pereira.

Robert Pereira honored with three scholarships

March 2011, Robert was first honored with receiving a substantial scholastic scholarship from Arizona State University and was accepted in to the W.P. Carey School of business.

May 2011 (Last night), Robert received two additional scholarships through Heritage High School.  The first one was awarded from the Heritage High School Baseball program (Rob was 1 of 3 players to receive a scholarship from the program).

The second one was in honor of Carl B. Casey. Mr. Casey passed away last year and in his honor and for the love of baseball (& golf) the family created this scholarship.  Mr. Mark Casey introduced the award on behalf of his wife and mother who were also in the audience.  Mark informed the filled auditorium what his Dad's passions were and how this scholarship represents what his Dad liked to see in a player.   ... and the player selected as the first recipient of the award is Robert Pereira.  Wow, what a surprise and what and honor!
Thank you to the entire Casey family, what an honor for Robert (& the entire Pereira family)... and congratulations to Robert for demonstrating the qualities most admired by a long time fan of baseball!

California Smoke Baseball Club announces 2011 Team Roster

May 2011, California Smoke Baseball Club announces 18U summer roster.  These players represent the best Northern California has to offer. There are players from 18 different high schools,  many of these veteran players have played in the prestigious invitation only  Norther California World Series - the younger players have been invited to the world series this year.

Several of these players have already committed to play college baseball, others will use the summer to impress the recruiters... and make their selection, soon.
The Smoke have a 55 game summer schedule and is available on smokebaseball.com  There is a nice balance of 19U games (15 games),  younger programs (4 games) to go along with what many say is the toughest Connie Mack division in the State of California. The summer tournament schedule could not be tougher.  The Smoke play in an exclusive 19U tournament run by Top Speed, a 4th of July tournament filled with 19U teams in Reno, Nevada, the Delta Indians Tournament which has 24 teams and with a very challenging draw of Connie Mack teams from up and down the state, then the State Tournament for Connie Mack drawing the top 8 teams from Northern California.  The Smoke will conclude their summer in Oceanside at a tournament that has 24 teams - last year the Smoke played 11 games in 6 days.

All games this summer will be wood bat, only.

**The Media Guide for 2011 ***20th Anniversary Edition*** is AMAZING.  This year the guide was increase to 12 pages to cover former player e-mails about their Smoke experience and favorite game and the congratulation messages from college coaches.  It will be  a true collectors item for every Smoke player. Heritage High School Patriots Varsity Baseball vs Monte Vista Mustangs

http://norcalpreps.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1200928

March 16, 2011
Mustangs Shine through rain
In a rain soaked contest at Monte Vista High on Tuesday afternoon, the Mustangs were able to pull out a 2-0 win over Heritage in a game called after five innings. The victory, which was propelled by a strong pitching outing from junior Daniel Gallagher, leaves them perfect on the young season at 6-0.

The conditions were tough from the beginning as Heritage looked to possibly get on the board in the first inning when junior Carlos Carrillo led the game off with an opposite field double. However, the Patriots weren't able to bring him in for what would prove to be a pivotal point of the game. The game remained scoreless as Gallagher and Heritage junior right-hander Paul Blackburn were able to get into good rhythms early.

In the bottom of the third, catcher Brad Mulvihill reached on an infield single before Ryan Lacy perfectly placed a double into right field right down the line to give Monte Vista runners on second and third with no outs. CJ Robertson plated the first run with a single back up the middle and Brandon Carr made it 2-0 on a sacrifice fly to left field.

Both team never challenged again and as the rain continued to fall steadily, the game was called after five innings as Monte Vista wins a pitcher's duel with the teams combining for seven hits.

"I just like the way we play the game, even today in a tough difficult game to play," Monte Vista head coach Bill Piona said. "We kept our focus, we battled, came up with a couple of clutch hits."

W: Gallagher L: Blackburn Top Players: Heritage - Blackburn 5IP, 6H, 2ER, 3K Monte Vista - Lacy 2-for-3, 2B, R; Gallagher 5IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 3K

Monte Vista: The story was Gallagher in this one as the 6-foot-5 junior showed nice control and a good feel for his breaking stuff to work off the fastball. He pitched at a good tempo and challenged hitters early in the count, which was key on a day like today.

"He has very good control and he has a very good breaking ball. He can throw his breaking ball anywhere in the count and as he gets stronger, he going to be even better," Piona said. "He can get a little stronger, which will help his fastball and help him stay out there a little longer. He's very consistent and for a guy that big, he repeats really well. If you are a high school guy who can throw his breaking ball anytime in the count, it makes you pretty good."

Lacy, a senior, showed he can go to the opposite field and covers the plate well. Talented junior Tony DiMartino, already a verbal commitment to Arizona State, battled well on his first at-bat to get an opposite field double and also showed good hands in receiving throws at first base.

Heritage: Heritage was paced by the pitching of Blackburn, who had stretches of easily working through the order on Tuesday. His delivery allows him to build up his power and showed a nice fastball and breaking stuff. He has the feel on his breaking stuff to throw it for strikes. While he gave up six hits, he had very few balls hit hard against him. Senior outfielder Robert Pereira had two solid at-bats with a solid line-out to the opposite field in right and battling in the fifth before striking out against some quality stuff from Gallagher.

Testimony - God is GREAT!

Based on a true life story... not only based on it - its true, 100%!

Yesterday I received a text wishing me a good morning...
I responded with "Have a great and blessed day! Love you"

Followed by "You too... Say an extra prayer as I walk in for my final... now ... I love you so much.. !"
response: "Will do!" - and I did.  I prayed that God would help this person recall all they knew and apply it to this test"

One and a half hours later...
"Thank you, Finished my final ... I think it went great...  Have a beautiful day! : )"

Four hours from the original text, I received a text...
"I just got my exam back... I got an A"
Response: "Cool!" "God is great! Giving you the strength to recall all you know. Congratulations"

"Yes He is !..Instead of trying to cram in the last 30 min prior to the exam I prayed  using my daily meditation book and it was all about fear and giving to him... I love my life! and I love you that I can share it with you!"

Agape Love - Footprints

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed foot prints in the sand, Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there was one only. This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow, or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said to the Lord, "You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life that there has only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?" The Lord replied, "The years when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you."

I know I am a child of God, because he has told me so... and there have been many years, weeks, days, and hours when I know the Lord was carrying me... otherwise I would not have made it through those difficult times.

Praise him... always!
God is good all the time! Trust in God!

I will rise when you call my name...
I surrender all to you... I surrender all for you...

Help me understand - baseball is a funny game

I ask myself... why is a college level player with a .300%+ batting average sitting the bench???  There are 6 guys batting over .300... multiple starters well under .300. Help me understand!

As a team their overall record is 12-13, team batting average is .290... and in the first game of a DH they are getting clobbered 11-1!

Results of the ACU vs TIU double header, yesterday

Arizona Christian University baseball took both games of their double header today with Trinity International University, winning 4-3 and 6-5.

How GREAT is our GOD

The splendor of the King
Clothed in majesty
Let all the earth rejoice, all the earth rejoice
He wraps himself in light
And darkness tries to hide
And trembles at His voice,
And trembles at His voice

How great is our God
Sing with me
How great is our God
And all will see
How great, how great is our God

Age to age He stands
And time is in His hands
Beginning and the End,
Beginning and the End
The Godhead, Three in One
Father, Spirit, Son
The Lion and the Lamb, Lion and the Lamb

Name above all names
Worthy of all praise
My heart will sing how great is our God

Realizing I have what is really important in life - The rest is just noise

Today... well this week has been challenging for a few reasons... events out of my control, results beyond my authority, things I don't understand and yet...... I know I am blessed!

I've come to realize (I've known for quite some time) I have what counts most and it’s not something everyone has! I have been BLESSED - many times over.

Although it has taken me several years, I know I have been blessed as a child of God!  God has provided me just what I've need throughout my life - even when I didn't understand and sometimes still don't.

God has also blessed me with a fantastic wife, a wife that God selected for me... from the day I met her at Lake Shasta through today she is the one I love. ...and she loves me.

I also know I have two fantastic children, children I am very proud of that I love very much and I know they love me.

And family, family that is always there for me... and I, also, try to be there for them... I love them very much and I know they love me.

"Life is just a dash between two numbers" It's very true!

This week a family member passed away... a family member I haven't seen in years. But losing her has surfaced many fond memories as a child and young adult. All of these memories include "family" - Uncles, Aunts, Cousins, Nino & Nina, grandparents, parents, and siblings.

Bernie Cardoza, I know you have reunited with your Mom & Dad (my Nino & Nina) and many family members before and after their passing. By the grace of God may you all rest in PEACE in the splendor of being in God's house.

Give thanks to God for all he does... in joy and in sorry. Celebrate life with family & loved ones while we are together on this God given earth... for after our last breath we will be together for an eternity!
